Dog Fighters Indicted: Big Win for AG’s Animal Cruelty Taskforce (ACT)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Wednesday, February 27, 2008

(LAS CRUCES) — A grand jury in Las Cruces has indicted twin brothers on multiple charges including dog fighting, extreme cruelty and conspiracy in a case coordinated closely by Attorney General Gary King’s Animal Cruelty Taskforce (ACT). Duryea and Duron Scott, of El Paso, Texas, had been the focus of a task force and local law enforcement investigation since last October following raids on four properties controlled by the twins in Chaparral, N.M. and El Paso.

“This is a good outcome for our Animal Cruelty Taskforce, especially since we just received funding from the Legislature and I think this shows it is money well spent,” says Attorney General King. “Whether it is a celebrity football player in Atlanta or twins from El Paso, this action underscores the fact that people in New Mexico and the nation are not going to stand for this type of cruelty to animals any longer.”

Charges against Duryea Scott include:
* 9 counts of dog fighting
* 4 counts of extreme cruelty
* 6 counts of misdemeanor cruelty
* 1 count of conspiracy

Charges against Duron Scott include:
* 9 counts of dog fighting
* 1 count of extreme cruelty
* 12 counts of misdemeanor cruelty
* 1 count of conspiracy

If convicted, the brothers face more than a combined 65 years in prison. No word yet on a trial date.

SUNDANCE RANCH SANCTUARY ADOPTION FEES GO UP

Clovis, New Mexico, 1/14/08– Due to rising costs in food and veterinary care for the animals at the Sundance Ranch Feline Sanctuary. We have been forced to increase our adoption fees. The new fees which began on January 1st of this year are $40.00 for cats one-year and older and $50 for kittens less than one-year of age.

The adoption fees still include full vaccinations, spay and neuter surgery, FIV/FeLV testing, complete medical history, sample foods and treats. Even with the increase the Sundance Ranch still maintains the lowest adoption fees in New Mexico. The average adoption fee for NM sanctuaries is $75.00 per cat or kitten.

NEW MEXICO'S SPAY/NEUTER PET CARE LICENSE PLATE

In 2003, New Mexico State Representative Irvin Harrison (D - Gallup) sponsored HB566, the legislation that authorized the creation and sale of New Mexico's Spay/Neuter Pet Care License Plate.

In 2005, Animal Protection of New Mexico joined the effort, working with the Motor Vehicle Department and others to have the plate designed and produced. The license plate design, created by Josh Leach while he was a design student at Albuquerque's Art Center Design College, is a colorful and eye-catching pawprint over an outline of New Mexico and it includes the message: Don't Litter. Spay - Neuter.

The purpose of the plate is twofold: to educate people about the pet overpopulation issue facing New Mexico and to help fund spay/neuter surgeries for dogs and cats in New Mexico. It is critically important for communities throughout the state to get involved in solving our dog and cat overpopulation crisis. Everyone needs to work together to reduce the euthanasia numbers confronting shelters in New Mexico. New Mexico's Pet Care License Plate is one effective tool, among many others, that will help solve the problem. A portion of the price of each license plate will be distributed to fund local spay/neuter programs.

The Spay/Neuter Pet Care License Plate must be ordered from the Motor Vehicle Department. Order forms can be obtained at any MVD office or downloaded from their website at: http://www.state.nm.us/tax/forms/mvd/Mvd11249.pdf

HOW YOU CAN HELP:

· APNM is producing a poster to raise awareness about the plate. If you can display the poster in high visibility areas such as animal shelters, stores and government offices, please call (505) 265-2322 x21 or email us at tisha@apnm.org. Let us know how many posters you can display and where to send them. You can also download the poster here: http://www.apnm.org/campaigns/spay_neuter/index.php

· Order the plate for ALL of your vehicles! It is a simple way to contribute to the fight to overcome dog and cat overpopulation and alleviate animal suffering. Together, we can make this the most successful special plate our state has ever had!

UNIQUE FUNDRAISING IDEA

Celeste Kuta, a great animal lover and one of our long-time supporters, asked whether she could do something special to help PETroglyphs. She and Joe Aquilina, another animal lover, were engaged. They decided that rather than receive a lot of gifts at their shower, they wanted to share their happiness by having people give gifts to others in their name. They selected two charities that were close to their hearts and gave their shower guests the option of donating to one or the other of the charities instead of bringing a gift.

PETroglyphs received over $500 in donations from Celeste and Joe’s generosity and thoughtfulness for which we are most grateful. It will help PETroglyphs continue its mission as the voice for the animals.

Another benefit is that many people in Illinois will be receiving PETroglyphs in return for their donation. The cause of animals will spread a little further.

Perhaps there is an occasion in your life where you know people will bring you gifts, but you don’t really need or want anything. You, too, could suggest that they donate to a charity in your name. Of course, if you wanted to give them PETroglyphs as a choice for their donation, that would be wonderful.

Thank you, Celeste and Joe, for your support of PETroglyphs and your love of animals. And thanks for having a terrific, unselfish and generous fundraising idea.

If any of you have a unique fundraising idea you would like to share with us, we would be glad to hear about it.

NEW BOOK RELEASED:

Goodbye, Jake
by Bam Schildkraut

Goodbye, Jake is a newly released book by Bam Schildkraut. The story centers on a family coping with the loss of one of their beloved pets, Jake, a red and black greyhound. The story centers on Cole, an inquisitive, sensitive young boy. Jake's passing is Cole's first experience with death. With the help of his grandmother and a local archaeologist studying ancient Native American cultures, Cole learns how people, past and present, preserve memories and celebrate the lives of loved ones who have died. Goodbye, Jake is a reassuring story for children dealing with the death of a pet or anyone coping with loss.

The illustrations in soft watercolors by Whitney Martin, contribute to the loving and compassionate mood of the story.

Goodbye, Jake is available at Bookworks in Albuquerque and at Collected Works in Santa Fe. For more information on the book and additional ordering options, visit the author's website at www.bamschildkraut.com    [Check our review of the book]
